SIX EXTINCTIONS

Travel back 485 million years, to a time when complex life only existed in the sea and the first plants appeared on land. Follow the history of life through the dinosaurs to us and explore the five mass extinction events in Earth’s History. Although not all previous mass extinctions are fully understood this exhibition looks at the available evidence, show how the climate has changed in the past and the effect it has had on life. Find out what caused the extinctions, what became extinct, and how these events shaped the world we know today.

This exhibition showcases an amazing collection of fossils, life-like models, and large artworks. Meet some of the top predators of each geological period and come face to face with Endoceras, Dunkleosteus, Inostrancevia, Postosuchus and the largest Tyrannosaurus rex ever discovered! Meet the early megafauna of the Holocene and look at how human activity has impacted life during the sixth mass extinction, the one we are in now, in Six Extinctions.

SIX EXTINCTIONS

The death of the dinosaurs is the most famous extinction, but it is only one of the five past mass extinctions that has decimated life on the planet. An extinction happens when an entire species completely disappears. It is believed that over 99% of all species that have ever lived are now extinct, it is a natural part of life, as new species evolve, older species fade away.

A mass extinction happens when at least three-quarters of all species on the planet die out in a relatively short space of geologic time, which is less than 2.8 million years. Mass extinctions often mark the boundaries between geological periods. They have paved the way for new life forms to emerge, if not for the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs, we would not be here today.

From the geological record, we know of five mass extinction events. But did you know that we are currently living the sixth mass extinction?

Extinctions and climate change are a natural part of life on Earth, and all past extinctions have occurred without human interference, but our current extinction rate is happening much faster than most. This exhibition explores the five mass extinctions throughout Earth’s history and looks at our current extinction crisis, the Sixth Extinction.
